Above 80 lines up well with typical requirements. 60 to 79 is in range with one or two factors to watch. 40 to 59 usually means a smaller first amount or a different structure. Below 40 means a few fixes first will likely get you a better offer.

What the score looks at

Every factor is one a funder reads on a Canadian file. The points below add up to 100 before the revenue-trend adjustment and the caps.

FactorPointsWhat it reflects
Monthly deposits25About $20,000 a month in deposits is a typical starting point. $40,000 and up scores full marks.
Time in business15About 12 months is typical. Under 6 months caps the score at 45; 6 to 12 months caps it at 62.
Owner credit15Scores from 500 are considered; 600 and above opens better options. Under 500 caps the score at 45.
Average daily balance15The cushion between deposits. A thin balance is a common reason files stall.
Low or negative days10Days under about $300 or below zero. Funders typically accept up to about 7 a month.
NSFs10Returned items in the last 90 days.
Existing advances10Second-position funding is possible; three or more open advances caps the score at 59.
Revenue trend0 to -8Steady or growing costs nothing; seasonal takes 3; declining takes 8.

Quick score and detailed score

Quick score (4 answers). Deposits, time in business, credit and industry are scored exactly as above. The five bank-statement factors are not guessed in your favour or against you: each is scored at its middle level and marked Assumed. A quick score therefore tops out in the low 80s even for an excellent file.

Detailed score (up to 9 answers). Open "Make it more accurate" and answer any of the five bank-statement questions. Each answer replaces the middle value with the real rating, so the score can move up or down. With all five answered, the result says "Based on all 9 answers".

How to raise your score before you apply

In practice

A Calgary restaurant with about $45,000 a month in deposits, three years in business, a 620 credit score and no open advances scores 79 on the quick score. Answering the bank-statement questions with a $6,000 daily balance, no low days, no returned items and steady revenue lifts it to 94, and the likely fit is a merchant cash advance, a business cash advance or revenue-based financing. If the same owner reports eight low-balance days a month, the score drops to 84, that factor is marked "needs work", and the advice is to clean up the account for a month first.

What the score does not know

The score cannot see your actual statements, your industry's specific rules with each funder, your province, or any recent changes to your business. Funding is provided by third-party funders; Merchant Fund Express is not a direct funder. Requirements vary by funder and file, and nothing here is a promise of approval.

Common questions

Does the score check my credit?

No. Nothing is sent anywhere and there is no credit check. You choose a credit band yourself.

Is a high score an approval?

No. It is an estimate based on what Canadian funders typically look for. Real terms depend on your bank statements and the funder.

Why does the quick score top out in the low 80s?

Because the five bank-statement factors are scored at a middle value until you answer them. Answer them under "Make it more accurate" to see your full score.

Are the amounts in Canadian dollars?

Yes. Every amount on this page is in CAD.

What do Canadian funders typically look for?

A typical starting point is about $20,000 a month in deposits, about 12 months in business and only a few low or negative balance days a month. It varies by funder and file.
