How it actually works

Three months is a common minimum for smaller revenue-based requests. It shows recent deposit levels, balances and existing obligations. Four to six months gives underwriters a clearer trend and is often requested for larger amounts or when recent months look unusual.

Seasonal businesses benefit from providing more. A landscaping company applying in March, or a ski shop applying in August, may look weak on three months alone. Providing nine to twelve months shows the full annual pattern and that the business survives its off-season. Some funders request a full year for these businesses.

Renewals and buyouts often require recent statements covering the period since the last funding, so the funder can see how the existing obligation was paid. Expect to provide statements for every business account that receives revenue, not just the main one.

Banks and SBA lenders typically want more history overall: business tax returns for two or more years, year-end and year-to-date financial statements and often several months of statements as well.

Month-to-date activity matters because underwriters want to see the most current picture. A printout or export from your bank portal covering the current month is usually requested along with the full monthly statements.

MFE considers credit from 500 and typically reviews the most recent months plus current activity; providing extra months upfront for seasonal patterns can avoid back-and-forth.

If your business recently switched banks, provide statements from both the old and new accounts covering the requested period. Underwriters prefer a continuous history, and a short note explaining the switch prevents the new account from looking like a brand-new business.

Statements should match the business on the application. If one account is in the owner personal name but receives business revenue, explain it, and consider moving all business deposits to an account in the business name going forward.
