Revenue-based financing

Revenue-based financing for Shopify stores: funding that sees every channel.

Platform offers are based on platform sales. A bank-deposit review sees the whole business, including wholesale, markets and other channels.

Should a Shopify store use Shopify Capital or deposit-based financing?

Short answer: Shopify offers financing to eligible merchants based on Shopify sales, and in Canada describes it as a loan. It is convenient when an offer appears in the admin, but it only sees revenue processed through Shopify. Stores selling wholesale, on marketplaces or in person often get a better-sized offer from a review of all bank deposits.

Key facts

  • Shopify offers see only Shopify sales
  • Deposit reviews see every channel
  • Compare total cost in dollars
  • Both repay from sales

Platform offers vs a deposit review

Shopify offers financing to eligible merchants based on their Shopify sales history, and in Canada it describes that product as a loan. It is convenient when an offer appears in the admin. The limitation is that the offer only sees revenue processed through that platform.

Many Canadian stores sell through several channels: their own site, a wholesale account with a retailer, pop-up markets, Amazon and social commerce. A deposit-based review reads everything that lands in the business account, which can support a larger or better-shaped advance when Shopify is only part of the story.

What the review reads

If you already have platform financing

Platform financing is usually repaid by withholding a share of payouts. That reduces the deposits a second funder sees. Disclose it, include the current balance and plan any new advance so the combined withholding still leaves enough cash for reorders.

Fitting it to your calendar

Most Canadian online stores earn heavily from late October to December. Inventory is bought in August and September. An advance taken before the purchase and repaid as a share of holiday sales matches the money to the season instead of forcing a fixed payment in a quiet February.

A worked example

Illustrative arithmetic: a Shopify store with $55,000 monthly deposits across channels

  • Advance: $40,000. Repayment cap: $40,000 × 1.20 = $48,000.
  • Cost of the capital: $8,000, fixed in dollars from the start.
  • Payment: 10% of monthly revenue. At $55,000 a month that is $5,500, so about 8.7 months to reach the cap.

Every figure on this page is illustrative arithmetic in Canadian dollars. It is not an offer, a quote or a promise of approval.

Where Canadian files usually start

Monthly revenueTypically from around $20,000 a month in deposits for Canadian files. The exact line varies by funder and by file.
Time in businessTypically about 12 months. Newer businesses can be reviewed, but the options narrow.
Account healthLimited low-balance or negative days. Funders read the last few months of bank statements for this.
CreditScores from 500 are considered. A score of 600 or higher opens more options and better offers.
DocumentsA signed application and recent business bank statements, typically the last four months.
Existing advancesFiles with an existing advance can be reviewed, including second position.

Next step: apply once with a signed application and your last four months of business bank statements. The file is read for rBF for Shopify stores and matched to the structure that fits, whether that is revenue-based financing, a merchant cash advance or a smaller first advance that builds history.
