What are the biggest myths about revenue-based financing?

Short answer: The common myths are that it is only for tech start-ups, that it takes equity, that it is a loan with hidden interest, that it needs collateral and that payments never change. In reality it works for any business with steady revenue, takes no equity, has a fixed cap in dollars and payments that follow revenue.

Key facts

  • Works for clinics, restaurants, trades and retail
  • No equity changes hands
  • Cost is a fixed cap, set on day one
  • Payments follow revenue

Myth 1: It is only for tech start-ups

Revenue-based financing became known through software and ecommerce companies, but it works for any business with steady revenue: clinics, restaurants, trades, agencies and retailers. What matters is the revenue pattern, not the industry label.

Myth 2: It takes equity

It does not. The funder receives a share of revenue until a fixed cap is reached, then the agreement ends. You keep full ownership.

Myth 3: It is always more expensive than a loan

It can cost more than a bank loan for a business that qualifies for one. But many businesses do not qualify for bank financing quickly, and the flexibility of a revenue-based payment has real value in a slow month. Compare the total dollars, the time and the flexibility.

Myth 4: Credit does not matter

Credit matters, but it is not the main factor. Scores from 500 are considered, and a stronger score opens better options. Revenue and account health carry more weight than they would at a bank.

Myth 5: Paying early always saves money

With a fixed cap, paying early only saves money if there is an early payoff discount. Ask before you plan around it.

Myth 6: The payment is always a true percentage

Some agreements use an estimated fixed payment adjusted through reconciliation. Read how your agreement works.

Myth 7: You can take as many as you like

Stacking several advances can push total payments past what the business can carry. Add up every payment before taking another.

Where Canadian files usually start

Monthly revenueTypically from around $20,000 a month in deposits for Canadian files. The exact line varies by funder and by file.
Time in businessTypically about 12 months. Newer businesses can be reviewed, but the options narrow.
Account healthLimited low-balance or negative days. Funders read the last few months of bank statements for this.
CreditScores from 500 are considered. A score of 600 or higher opens more options and better offers.
DocumentsA signed application and recent business bank statements, typically the last four months.
Existing advancesFiles with an existing advance can be reviewed, including second position.

Next step: apply once with a signed application and your last four months of business bank statements. The file is read for rBF myths and matched to the structure that fits, whether that is revenue-based financing, a merchant cash advance or a smaller first advance that builds history.
