Auto repair equipment
An alignment rack pays for itself only if the jobs exist and the bay has room. Here is the per-job math, a dated comparison of equipment financing and a revenue-based advance, and when to keep subletting.

If your shop already sublets a steady stream of alignments and has idle hours in one bay, an alignment machine usually pays back inside a year, and equipment financing is normally the better fit because the payment is spread over the working life of the machine. A short-term advance on the same purchase can cost more per week than the machine earns, so it fits only when speed matters more than price or the shop also needs cash for something else.
If you sublet fewer than five alignments a week and do not inspect alignment on every tire and suspension job, keep subletting for now. The machine will sit.
Take a four-bay independent shop: 5 years open, about $62,000 a month in deposits, a 640 FICO. Today it sends roughly 12 alignments a week to a tire store down the street.
| Case | Price | Direct cost | Contribution per job |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subletting today | $110 charged | $75 paid to the tire store | $35 |
| In-house | $120 charged | $26 tech time (0.75 hr) and $4 consumables and data subscription share | $90 |
| Gain per job brought in-house | $55 | ||
| Gain per new job (checks on tire and suspension work) | $90 |
Conservative case: only the 12 sublets come in-house, so 12 × $55 = $660 a week, or about $2,858 a month. Expected case: add 8 new jobs a week from checks on cars already in the bays, 8 × $90 = $720, for $1,380 a week, or about $5,975 a month. Upsold suspension parts are left out on purpose.
The quote: imager $34,000, alignment-capable four-post lift $10,500, install and training $2,000. Total $46,500. Paid in cash, the expected case returns the purchase in about 34 weeks ($46,500 ÷ $1,380).
Twenty alignments at 0.75 hours each is 15 bay hours a week. If bay four bills 25 of its 45 available hours today, the alignment work fits into idle time and the four-post lift still handles general service between alignments. If bay four is already full, every alignment hour displaces mechanical work you bill at a higher rate, and the math above stops being true. Count your bay hours from the last eight weeks of repair orders before you request a quote.
Option A: equipment financing. $46,500 financed with an assumed payment of $1,180 a month for 48 months, first payment December 16, 2026, last payment November 16, 2030. Total repaid: $56,640. The payment equals about $272 a week, which 5 in-house sublets or 3 new jobs cover.
Option B: a revenue-based advance. $50,000 at an assumed factor of 1.30, so $65,000 repaid, with an assumed $1,500 fee. Net proceeds $48,500. Funded Monday, November 2, 2026, then 40 weekly payments of $1,625 from November 9, 2026 to August 9, 2027.
| Equipment financing | Revenue-based advance | |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly payment | About $272 | $1,625 |
| Conservative contribution ($660/week) | Covers it 2.4 times | Short $965 a week |
| Expected contribution ($1,380/week) | Covers it 5 times | Short $245 a week |
| Total repaid | $56,640 over 4 years | $65,000 over 40 weeks |
The advance is faster to arrange and leaves the machine unencumbered, but in both cases the shop subsidizes the payment from its other work for 40 weeks. That is why the machine itself is usually better financed against its own life.
All figures in worked examples are illustrations of the arithmetic, not offers or quotes. Real terms depend on your file and the funder.
A first review needs no tax returns. Our published thresholds are on the funding requirements page: the revenue-based tier reads 6+ months, a 600+ FICO and $60,000 in verifiable revenue, while a line of credit or term loan needs 3+ years and a 650+ FICO. For more shop-specific options, see equipment financing for auto repair and the auto repair cash flow guide. When the job count holds up, start the 5-minute application.
It is when the jobs already exist. Count your sublet alignments and your idle bay hours first. Around 10 sublets a week with spare bay time usually supports the payment; under 5 usually does not.
Equipment financing spreads the cost over the machine’s life, so the weekly payment is far below what the jobs earn. A short advance can work when you need speed or extra cash, but its weekly payment may exceed the machine’s contribution.
A FICO of 500 is the minimum we consider. The revenue-based tier reads 600 and above, and a line of credit or term loan reads 650 and above.
Sublet invoices from the shop doing your alignments today, plus repair orders showing tire and suspension work where a check would be offered.
Include them in the quote so the full installed cost is visible. Ask the vendor about any yearly data subscription, which is a running cost and belongs in your per-job math.
