Solar is a long-payback asset; it fits long-term equipment financing or incentives, not short-term advances.

Commercial solar can reduce electricity costs for decades, and federal tax incentives can lower the net cost. Whether it is worth financing depends on your energy use, roof or site, ownership of the building, tax situation and how long you expect to stay.

Start with your electricity bills. Businesses with high daytime usage, such as restaurants, cold storage, manufacturers and retailers with heavy lighting and cooling, tend to see the strongest savings. A solar installer can estimate production for your site and compare it with 12 months of usage to project savings.
Federal incentives can be significant. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 extended and expanded the investment tax credit for commercial solar, with a base credit and potential bonus amounts for meeting certain requirements; eligibility and amounts depend on project details and have been subject to later legislative changes. Depreciation benefits may also apply. Confirm current rules with a tax professional, since the benefit depends on your tax liability.
Consider ownership and tenure. If you lease your space, a solar installation requires landlord approval and may not make sense if your lease ends before the system pays back. If you own the building and plan to stay, the long payback horizon is easier to justify.
Financing choices include solar loans, equipment financing, leases and power purchase agreements (PPAs), where a third party owns the system and you buy the power at an agreed rate. Loans and ownership capture tax benefits; leases and PPAs reduce upfront cost but shift benefits to the owner.
Because solar pays back over years, it fits long-term financing far better than short-term capital. Short-term funding might cover a small deposit or ancillary electrical upgrades, but not the system itself.
MFE considers credit from 500 for short-term needs; for the solar system, compare dedicated solar loans, equipment financing and PPAs.
Here is short-term capital for ancillary upgrades, not the solar system itself. Illustrative numbers.
| Funding for the project | $125,000 |
| Total payback (factor 1.25) | $156,250 |
| Term | ~32 weeks |
| Payment per week | $4,883 |
| Monthly payment the project must cover | $21,143 |
| Your estimate of added monthly profit | $30,000 |
| Verdict | Pays back within the term |
Illustrative. Replace the estimate with your own numbers before applying.
| Solar loan | Ownership, tax benefits, long term |
| Equipment financing | Asset-backed, multi-year |
| Lease | Lower upfront, benefits to lessor |
| Power purchase agreement | Buy power, no ownership |
| Short-term capital | Deposits or ancillary upgrades only |
Good fit:
Probably not yet:
Often for high daytime users who own their building and plan to stay.
An investment tax credit, extended under the Inflation Reduction Act, plus possible depreciation; confirm current rules.
With landlord approval, but short leases often make it uneconomic.
A third party owns the system and you buy its power at an agreed rate.
Not for the system; long-term financing fits its payback.
Compare projected production with 12 months of usage.
