Tax returns are a look backward. They may be a year or more old, they may be on extension, and they often show a lower income than the business really produces because of legitimate deductions. Businesses that grew fast this year, owners whose returns are on extension, operators with big write-offs, and newer businesses without multiple years of filings. If your recent bank activity looks stronger than your last return, a statement-based review is built for that.
No tax returns does not mean no review. Your deposits, account health and existing obligations still drive whether an offer is made and how large it is. A distribution business doubled its sales this year, but its last filed return reflects the smaller business it used to be, and this year's return is on extension. A bank reviewing that return sees last year's numbers. A statement-based review sees the deposits flowing in now. For a growing business, that difference can decide whether the amount offered actually fits the need.
The flip side: if recent months are weaker than your returns, statements will show that too.
