What a funder actually looks at

A funding decision on an established business turns on the business: its deposits, how steady they are, what it already owes, how long it has operated and what industry it is in. The owner's sexual orientation and gender identity are not part of that review. What you can control is how clear the file is, and that is where most of the practical advice below sits.

Your fair lending rights

The Equal Credit Opportunity Act, implemented by Regulation B, covers business credit as well as consumer credit. It prohibits creditors from discriminating against applicants on the basis of sex, marital status and other protected characteristics. If you believe a credit decision was discriminatory, you can ask the creditor for the specific reasons for a denial and file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Certification: the door a loan cannot open

The National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) runs the Certified LGBT Business Enterprise (LGBTBE) program for LGBT-owned businesses. Certification is not funding. It puts the business in front of corporate and government supplier diversity programs, and a signed contract with a large buyer often does more for a future funding request than anything else, because it turns into predictable deposits.

Some state and local governments may recognize LGBT-owned business certification in their own procurement programs. Check your state procurement office to see whether yours does before you plan around it.

A practical note on names and documents

Identity checks compare the name on your ID with the name on the bank account, the business registration and the credit file. If you have changed your name, make sure the change has reached each of those places before you apply, or be ready to explain the difference and show the supporting document. A mismatch can stall a file for reasons that have nothing to do with the business.

If you own the business with a spouse or partner, list both owners and their ownership percentages. The application asks for each owner's name, ownership percentage, home address, date of birth and SSN, and the review moves faster when the numbers add up.

Which product fits which need

A business line of credit covers recurring gaps such as payroll timing. Working capital handles a one-time push, such as stocking up for a new contract. Equipment financing pays for tools, vehicles or machines. A merchant cash advance or revenue-based financing ties repayment to sales, which some card-heavy businesses prefer. Pick the product that matches the use, not the largest number you can get.

How we review an LGBTQ-owned business

We do not run a special program for LGBTQ-owned businesses. We review them the same way we review every established business: deposits, existing obligations, credit, and how the business operates. Applying starts with a 5-minute application and about three months of business bank statements, with a soft credit pull to start. FICO 500+ is considered, and funding ranges from $25,000 to $5,000,000. No tax returns are required to apply. Every offer shows the full repayment amount before you accept.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a special program for LGBTQ-owned businesses?

No. We review LGBTQ-owned businesses the same way we review every established business: deposits, existing obligations, credit, and how the business operates.

Does the application ask about sexual orientation or gender identity?

No. The application asks for business details and owner details such as name, ownership percentage, home address, date of birth and SSN.

Will NGLCC certification help me get a loan?

Not directly. Certification opens supplier diversity programs. Contracts won through them create steady deposits, which is what funders weigh most.

What if my name differs between my ID and my bank account?

Update the records before applying if you can, or be ready to show the supporting document. Matching names keep identity checks from stalling the file.

What credit score do I need?

FICO 500+ is considered. Credit is weighed alongside your deposit history and current obligations.

How to make the file easy to review

  • Keep your legal name consistent across ID, bank and filings
  • List every owner with their ownership percentage
  • Run all revenue through the business account
  • Write down exactly what the funds will pay for
