Business funding for owners under 30

Being young is not the obstacle. A short credit history and a short track record are. Here is what funders weigh, what is realistic at each stage, and how to get there faster.

Age is not the issue. Track record is.

The Equal Credit Opportunity Act, implemented by Regulation B, bars creditors from discriminating on the basis of age once an applicant can legally enter a contract. What holds younger owners back is usually not age itself, it is two things that come with starting early: a thin personal credit file and a business that has not been open long enough to show a pattern.

The two numbers that matter most

Time in business. Most funders want to see a business operating for a while before they lend against its revenue. On our published requirements, the revenue-based tier asks for 6+ months in business and $60,000 in verifiable revenue. Banks usually want more. See time in business for how it is measured.

Deposits. Revenue a funder cannot see in a business bank account does not count. Cash kept aside, payments to a personal account and transfers between apps all make a real business look smaller than it is.

Grants are rarer than social media suggests

The SBA states plainly on its grants page that it does not provide grants for starting and expanding a business. Real grants exist, mostly for research, specific industries or specific places, and they are competitive. Treat any offer of easy grant money for a fee as a red flag.

Build credit on purpose

A thin file fills in with time and with accounts that report. Pay personal accounts on time, keep card balances low, and open supplier accounts that report under the business EIN. Our guides on building business credit and business credit with weak personal credit cover the order to do it in. Get the business an EIN from the IRS, which is free.

How we review a business run by someone under 30

We do not run a special program for young owners. We review these businesses the same way we review every established business: deposits, existing obligations, credit, and how the business operates. Applying starts with a 5-minute application and about three months of business bank statements, with a soft credit pull to start. FICO 500+ is considered, and funding ranges from $25,000 to $5,000,000. No tax returns are required to apply. Every offer shows the full repayment amount before you accept. Sole proprietors can apply the same way an LLC or corporation does. If the business is very new, the first-time business owner guide is a better place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get business funding at 18 or 21?

Age alone is not a barrier once you can legally enter a contract. Time in business, deposits and credit history drive the decision.

How long does my business need to be open?

It varies by funder. On our published requirements, the revenue-based tier asks for 6+ months in business and $60,000 in verifiable revenue.

Are there government grants to start a business?

The SBA says it does not provide grants for starting and expanding a business. Grants that exist are mostly for research, specific industries or places, and they are competitive.

What credit score do I need?

FICO 500+ is considered. Credit is weighed alongside your deposit history and current obligations.

Do you have a special program for owners under 30?

No. We review these businesses the same way we review every established business: deposits, existing obligations, credit, and how the business operates.
