Your menu is the part of a POS that lives in your head. Getting it into the system cleanly is mostly an organizing job.
Start with what sells. List the top thirty items with prices and the modifiers each one needs, then group them the way your staff think: by station, by meal or by category.
Build modifiers once and reuse them, rather than creating a new item for every variation, so the menu stays small and the reports stay meaningful.
Top items first, grouped how staff think.
Create reusable modifier groups.
Use short names that fit on a ticket.
Ring a full order of each category before opening.
| Do | Avoid | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reusable modifiers | A new item per variation | Menu stays small |
| Short names | Long marketing names | Fits on tickets |
| Categories by station | One giant list | Faster entry |
| Top sellers first | Entering everything | Launch sooner |

Photograph the menu board and the specials list before you start, and enter items in the order customers order them rather than alphabetically. Anything that takes more than two taps on a busy day should be restructured before launch.
