An MCC is a four-digit code that describes what your business does. It follows you through every transaction.
Card networks and issuers use the MCC to categorize your sales, set some interchange categories and apply rules. It is assigned when your account is set up, based on what you actually sell.
A wrong or vague code can cause odd declines, higher costs or review flags, so it is worth checking that yours matches your business.
A four-digit code for your type of business.
On your account and in network data.
It can affect rates, rules and risk reviews.
At setup and whenever your business changes.
A caterer who also sells prepared meals at a counter finds her account is coded for catering only. Updating it to reflect both avoids a review when her counter volume grows.
If a term on your paperwork does not match what is written here, ask for it to be explained in writing. A good provider will happily walk through it, and a free statement review is an easy place to start.
If this is new to you, treat it as a vocabulary lesson, not a decision. The decisions come later, with a statement in front of you and a person who can explain the lines, and the words on this page are enough to follow that conversation.
Most owners only need to understand this once, at the moment a number on a statement or a clause in an agreement stops making sense. Having the idea clear in advance turns a stressful call into a routine one.
If you would rather hear it from us, call (305) 384-8391. We will walk through the decision with you, quote the equipment and processing for your business and look at your statement while we are at it.
If a code is wrong, ask your provider how it affects you before asking to change it: some changes alter interchange categories or reserve rules, and your provider should explain the effect. When your business adds a second line, such as retail alongside services, update the description of your business so the application and the code match what you actually do.
