How it actually works

The gap is documented. The Federal Reserve Small Business Credit Survey has repeatedly found that Black- and Hispanic-owned firms are less likely than white-owned firms to receive the full amount of financing they apply for, even after accounting for some differences in firm characteristics. Strong documentation and choosing lenders that evaluate the business on its performance help reduce that gap in individual cases.

Mainstream products are open to all owners. Bank and SBA loans offer the lowest cost for businesses with strong credit and history. Online lenders serve moderate profiles. Revenue-based funding is underwritten mainly on bank deposits and considers credit from 500, which makes it accessible to owners whose credit files are thin or were damaged in the past.

Targeted programs add options. Community development financial institutions (CDFIs) and minority depository institutions lend to underserved communities, often with flexible criteria and technical assistance. Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) Business Centers provide advising and access to contracts. The SBA 8(a) Business Development program supports socially and economically disadvantaged owners in competing for federal contracts.

Certification can matter as much as a loan. Minority business enterprise certification through organizations such as the National Minority Supplier Development Council, or state and city programs, can open supplier opportunities with large companies and governments. A won contract strengthens any funding application.

MFE works with owners from all backgrounds, reviewing deposits and business performance, and one application reaches multiple funders.

Owners can also look at programs tied to specific places. Many cities and states run small business loan funds or guarantee programs for businesses in designated neighborhoods or opportunity zones, often with flexible criteria and technical assistance. Local economic development offices can point to what is available.
